Hello all the children, my name in Jinyi Guo and today I am your lesson instructor, I do believe a lot of you really like nature, right? and your parents probably take you out during weekends to feel the embrace of nature, indeed, we are in contact with nature every day, as long as we are good at observing and discovering, the scientific problems around us are equally interesting, as we know, water is an absolutely necessary part in our daily life, however, do you guys ever hear about water recycling before? what types of water cycle reflected by the travel of water droplets? What links can human beings intervene or control in the water cycle? I know it might be unfamiliar to you guys, don’t worry, I made a funny Cartoon film, I do believe you guys will like it, and it will answer all the questions.

Cartoon: “Water Baby’s Water Cycle Adventures”
[Chapter 1: The Birth of Water Drops]
Water Baby: The story begins with a quiet lake, which is clear and warm. I am a tiny water drop, born on the lake. I feel warm and comfortable as a newborn.
[Chapter II: The Call of Sunlight]
Water Baby: But one day, the sun began to rise and the sun shone on the lake. The warm sunlight beckons me and makes me feel restless. I began to rise to the sky and become steam, which was the first wonderful adventure in my life.
[Chapter 3: Becoming a Cloud]
Water Baby: In the sky, I met other water drops, and we gathered together to form beautiful white clouds. Clouds are a magical and free place. We can fly freely in the clouds and watch the magnificent scenery of the earth.
[Chapter 4: Adventures in the Cloud]
Water Baby: But there are dangers in the clouds. One day, a storm cloud suddenly struck, and the water droplets in the cloud were swept away by the strong wind. Thunder roared and lightning tore through the sky. I and other water droplets were released to the earth, which was a thrilling adventure in my life.

Water Baby: With the raindrops falling together, I returned to the earth. We fell into the forest, nourished the earth and became a part of nature. Rain flooded the river, and we flocked to unknown destinations.

Water Baby: The river took us to the sea. The sea is so vast and full of all kinds of life. We are integrated into the sea and become a part of this vast world. In the sea, I started a new adventure with marine life, enjoying coral reefs, marine life and the beautiful underwater world.
[Chapter 7: Evaporation and Regeneration] Water Baby: The water in the sea is constantly embraced by the sun, and some of it turns into steam and rises to the sky. This is the beginning of a new cycle, and I am once again steam

Q1:What is the learning purpose of your video?
We are in contact with nature every day, feeling the great changes. As long as we are good at observing and discovering, the scientific problems around us are equally interesting. My cartoon tells children a story about the water cycle of water droplets from the perspective of the first person, which makes them think about the types of water cycle reflected by the travel of water droplets. What are the main links of each type? What links can human beings intervene or control in the water cycle? The main learning purpose of this video is to let children see the experiences and courses in water recycling from the perspective of water droplets, so they could better understand the water recycling in nature.
Q2: Which of the principles we’ve covered this term (e.g., Mayer/Universal Design for Learning/Cognitive Load Theory) did you incorporate into your design and why?
In the process of video production, I try my best to use a funny and concise way to reduce the unnecessary learning burden for my targeted audience young age children. I use the redundancy principle in Mayer’s principle, which requires me to reduce the interference to learners when making videos, so my videos are very simple, and I don’t use any more tricks except the pictures that match the words to help the audience better understand the water cycle. I also used the signal principle to mark the position where each water cycle knowledge point appeared, which aroused the audience’s attention to important knowledge points. This way of using visual cues to help the audience process the learning content can greatly improve the learning effect.
Q3: What was challenging about capturing your own video?
In processing this video, I think there are several difficulties:
1. The difficulty in designing the frame of story set. This video needs to explain a knowledge core through stories, so I need to set up a storyboard before the story begins to ensure the fluency of the whole story. I chose the knowledge point for teenagers-water cycle and set up the overall story framework with the story of a drop of water in the process of water cycle as the starting point. The anthropomorphic and first-person story description can improve the appeal of video to young audiences.
2. In order to improve the readability of video, I use the tool of text-voice to ensure editing and making video, which greatly reduces the appearance of some modal particles and jamming in dubbing. However, the audio read by the text-voice tool needs further adjustment to ensure the synchronization of sound and picture. This process requires me to constantly adjust the clips, which is a difficult job.
Q4: How would you approach capturing video differently next time?
In the next video production process, I hope to record some videos explaining a specific knowledge point on the whiteboard. For example, I will use the whiteboard to explain the topic of linear programming to the target audience, and I will combine body movements with language and pictures to improve the readability of the video. On the other hand, before the emergence of special knowledge points, I will use Mayer’s signal principle to increase tips to improve the audience’s attention to this part of the content. In addition, I will use some cases to explain the use of this solution to target audience by means of images.
