Reflection:

ln the reading this week, 7 Storytelling Techniques Used by the Most Inspiring TEDPresenters, which of the presenters did you find most compelling? What technique(s) did you recognize in their talk?

I will unconsciously use Mayer’s personalized principle in the process of telling the story again. For example, I will tell the story with very friendly and enthusiastic expectations, and I will become excited when I meet the climax of the story, trying to let the audience discuss with me the development of the story. In the reading material 7 Story Telling Techniques Used by the Most Inspired Presenters, I think that the way of expression and storytelling of 12-year-old Kenyan Marseille boy Richard Turell is very attractive. Before listening to this speech, I didn’t have a good understanding of this region or people in Kenya. I don’t know which continent this country is in. But the little boy’s story is undoubtedly touching. I seem to live on that grassland and play with his cattle, sheep and zebras, but the lives of these livestock were attacked by lions and so on. I will also be nervous, and even start to worry about the safety of these livestock and Richard’s life. His vivid description makes me feel immersive, and with the visual effect of the picture, I really want to appear on that grassland.

The techniques used by Richard are Mayer’s personalized principle and Mayer’s concise principle. There are no other complicated things on his PPT, just a few pictures, but with his speech, the overall expression makes people feel immersive. In addition, Richard’s expression is sincere, and this formal emotional and sincere expression makes people feel the feeling of being there.
